When coherent breathing does not work, the instruction is usually what is off

Following a breathing guide set to a speed that is not yours produces exactly what so many people describe: an unpleasant exercise, held together by discipline, with nothing at the end. That is not a lack of receptivity. It is a number picked for a population, applied without ever being retested on anyone.

It took me eighteen months to see it. In January 2025, after a round of layoffs at the company I worked for, a doctor recommended the classic protocol: three times a day, five minutes. I lasted eleven days. Every session felt like organised apnea, running out of air at the top of the inhale, pushing the exhale out to keep the count, finishing tenser than I started.

The problem was neither my motivation nor my nervous system. It was the speed.

People say you have to breathe exactly six times a minute

This is the most widespread instruction, the 5-5 pattern: five seconds in, five seconds out, three times a day. It has the advantage of fitting in one sentence. It has the flaw of being presented as a physiological threshold when it is only a practical landmark. No organ knows that number.

In heart rate variability biofeedback protocols, the rate is not decreed, it is searched for. The practitioner has the client try several speeds and keeps the one producing the largest heart rate oscillations. Lehrer and Gevirtz place that resonance frequency between 4.5 and 6.5 breaths per minute in adults, with variation linked in part to height and blood volume. A single instruction therefore cannot land right for everyone. It aims at the middle.

Your own rate sits somewhere between 4.5 and 6.5 breaths per minute

In practice that means there is room, and comfort is the best indicator you have without a sensor. A properly set breath asks for no effort at the end of the inhale and does not force the exhale. If you are short of breath by the fifth minute, you are breathing too fast, too deeply, or both.

The 6-6 rhythm, six seconds in and six seconds out, gives five breaths per minute. It sits inside the resonance range, a little below its middle, and it has a quality the 5-5 lacks: it leaves time for the movement to settle, like a tide rising and falling without a jolt. For many people left breathless by the standard speed, slowing down by one second on each side is enough to make the exercise workable.

People believe you must always exhale longer than you inhale

This rule has become a reflex. It rests on a real observation: the exhale comes with a slowing of the heart, the inhale with a speeding up. From there people concluded that stretching the exhale had to amplify the calming effect, and the 1:2 ratio took over the apps. The inference looked solid, and it was circulated before it was checked.

At slow speeds, the symmetric rhythm does just as well

Meehan and Shaffer compared the two options in 2024, at six breaths per minute, with students already trained in slow breathing. The result: no difference on heart rate variability measures between the 1:1 and the 1:2 ratio. The authors conclude that a practitioner may simplify and offer the symmetric rhythm according to the person's preference.

Some caution is due. The two experiments total around forty participants, young and trained. This is not a definitive refutation of the longer exhale, it is a signal pointing the same way as earlier work by Lin, Tai and Fan, where a symmetric rhythm at 5.5 breaths per minute produced the highest heart rate variability of the conditions tested.

The practical consequence is small and useful: if counting two different durations clutters your session, stop. An even breath in both directions is not a downgraded version of the exercise.

How long does it take to feel the effects of coherent breathing?

The honest answer: nobody knows precisely. The figures in circulation, three minutes to calm down, four to six hours of residual effect, two weeks to make it automatic, belong to popular science. As far as we know, no controlled trial established them as such.

What can be said fits in a 2017 meta-analysis covering 24 studies and 484 participants trained in heart rate variability biofeedback: the reduction in stress and anxiety these participants reported is clear, with an effect size of 0.81. That is encouraging, and it is a small crowd. The protocols ran over several sessions, not one.

In other words, expecting a switch to flip in the third minute of your first session is setting yourself up for disappointment. A breathing practice is judged over a few weeks, not on one immediate sensation.

People think feeling nothing means doing it wrong

This is what makes most people quit, by a wide margin. You breathe diligently for five minutes, you wait for the promised wave of calm, it does not come, and you conclude that you are immune to the whole thing.

Yet subjective sensation is a poor indicator of what is happening in the cardiovascular system. The two do not line up. Heart rate oscillations increase in someone who feels nothing in particular. Conversely, a person highly attuned to bodily signals may feel tightness precisely because they are monitoring their breath. This practice is not for you if counting sets off a rise in anxiety: the physiological sigh (in French), which is far shorter, or a non-respiratory anchor will serve you better.

France's national health research institute holds the same careful line in its fact-check on coherent breathing (in French): the biological mechanisms are poorly understood, the data are patchy, and the line is thin between that knowledge and the promises of healing sold around it. A five-minute exercise does not repair burnout. It gives you a handhold, which already counts for something when everything else is shaking, and that is what Nadia described after eight weeks of unclenching her jaw.

Starting again after a failed attempt, without redoing the protocol

Three adjustments are usually enough. Slow down to 6-6 and drop the longer exhale. Move from three daily sessions to a single one you actually keep, rather than three abandoned by day three. And stop checking for the effect mid-session, which amounts to taking the temperature by opening the oven every twenty seconds.

The word coherence did this practice no favours: it suggests that some particular state must settle in, when the exercise only gives the breath a slow, steady rhythm. None of these techniques holds authority over your nervous system. They offer a rhythm. You remain the judge of which one suits you.
